The Eep Squeek project:

kimuchi: I seem to remember some project called eep squeak? I was not involved...

hartmann: The program was actually called mouse, and it was ostensibly for making files capable of being shipped over *very* poor lines. For each bit in the file, either EEEEEP or SQUEAK would be written to stdout. Yes, that's an increase of fifty-six times (one bit suddenly becoming 7 eight-bit characters including the space). But that kind of redundancy made it really easy to recover data.

I didn't invent it, and I didn't write it. I am blameless.

We did use it for mailing moused core files to people back when that sort of thing was still amusing.
